Lt. Craggs posted 10-12-1999 12:55 PM Here are some ideas that work for me. At least I think they look good when I look at them. For red hair: Method 1: Paint Blood Red, wash with Chesnut wash. Gives hair a very red look. Method 2: Paint Red-Brown, highlight with Blood Red. For Blond hair: Paint Sunburst yellow, then use Flesh Wash. Gives the hair a sandy-blond or dirty-blond look. For Black: Paint Black, then wash with an armor wash. Highlight blue. Gives a glossy black hair look. For White: Paint white or gray, then wash with an armor wash For Blaze: Paint the hair the base color leaving a spot where you want blaze. Paint the blaze white, then wash the entire hair with the apropriate wash color. Hope this helps some. The suggestion I would make is *never* use straight yellow. Use for your base color an earth "yellow", (check out Polly Scale colors for their Earth Yellow, that is the base shade I use for blonde hair) which is not really yellow but more of a tan color with a very slight tinge of yellow in it. Wash with a medium to dark brown, then drybrush with your base color lightening up to an ivory color for the bright highlights. Any yellow you might use must be very subtle, else it comes off looking cartoonish. I'm no master of blonde hair by any measure (redheads are my specialty ;^), but starting out with a light yellow-brown or a dark yellow color is a good start. Ral Partha Manticore Mane yellow and Leather are good base colors. Leather is a bit dark, but you can add a touch of yellow or white to lighten it up. Wash hair with an appropriate paint or ink - GW sells an ink that is a little yellow/brown that does a decent job (forgot the name - I think it's Flesh Wash). Drybrush with a lighter shade of the basecoat. Wash with a thinner wash of the same color. Drybrush with an ivory or white to catch the highlights. Check out entry #16 in the "Classic" category of the Reaper Painting Contest http://www.reapermini.com/SingleFrame.htm for an example of excellent, realistic blonde hair. (And no, it's not my entry ;^) #85 is my entry, and this technique is what I did with her hair (though it's still a little too yellow for my taste). BTW, pick up a few women's clothing or swimsuit catalogs - look at the pictures and try to gauge what color the hair and skin is. It's always better to try and match reality than guess colors. Remember, no-one really has yellow hair. Find a colour magazine with a picture of a girl with the kind of blonde hair you are trying to recreate. Mix paint right on the photo until you get a shade which matches the blonde ("unbleached linen" is the colour I usually use as the base of the mix, or ivory with perhaps a touch of sand yellow). Put some of the mix aside; add brown to the rest to make it a little darker, paint the hair with this darker shade, then blend or drybrush with the original mix. Add a hint of white to what's left of the original mix, and do a very little drybrushing with that paler shade to add highlights. An alternative is to do the whole hair with the mixture that matches the photo, wash it with a thin brown wash, and then drybrush with a hint of white or cream added to the matching mixture. I don't normally bother doing it this way myself these days, as I have learned from experience which mixes give good results, but it is how I built up the experience. Also, a good tip is not to try something out for the first time on a cool reaper mini. Find a figure which is a little disappointing, or one which is just going to be an unimportant tavern wench or something, and experiment on that. If you're not happy with the result you haven't lost anything; the figure will still serve its purpose. If it works out well you can do it again on the reaper mini; and you might just find that the boring figure gets transformed into something cool in the process. Wash over with an orange-brown - caramel, or you could use the old GW flesh wash (now available as coate d'armes ). Hi-light by dry brushing with white and sand mixed. You could also try yellow, flesh wash and the above hi-light. For a very light sort of blonde, mix a bit of white in with the sand. I'd guess that the various blonde nuns-without-guns in the current white dwarf were done something like the above. It's the hi-light which makes the look of the colour on an area. If you use a yellow and white mix, you make the person have lemon coloured hair - which'd be rather weird.
